Time to Get Help? Learn about ADLs & IADLs
It's truly important to learn about what to look for and how to determine if your loved one is beginning to show signs of needing help to remain in their home and independent.
Family members may notice changes in their loved ones, changes that could possibly send up a red flag they may need additional assistance to remain independent and live at home safely.

These changes can be spurred by several factors such as:

  • Illness
  • Hospitalization
  • Cognitive decline
  • Normal aging
Assessing your elder's skills can help you get an understanding and plan for specific in-home services such as meal preparation, personal care and more.

If you have concerns about your loved one, there are two areas to assess:

  1. Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are actions and functions performed by your loved one on a daily basis. There are five ADLs and things to look for in each to indicate they may need help:

    1. Personal hygiene
    2. Eating
    3. Continence
    4. Dressing
    5. Transferring (e.g. ability to get in and out of bed and move from seated to standing).
  2. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) are also important skills necessary for a loved one to live independently.

    • Driving (ability to drive, use public transportation, etc.)
    • Meal preparation (ability to make meals and use kitchen equipment safely)
    • Medications (ability to manage medications, take the correct dosage at the correct time, and handle re-fills)
    • Shopping (ability to make appropriate decisions about food and clothing selection)
    • Communication (ability to use the telephone)
    • Personal finances (ability to manage finances, handle a budget, pay bills, etc.)
    • Housework (ability clean the house, do the dishes, etc.)
    • Laundry (ability to do personal laundry)
