How to Become an Exceptional Ager
Aging is a unique process, so just because you’re getting older, it doesn’t mean you should expect to become sick and deteriorate.  Of course, genetics and disease can determine if you age faster, but everyone ages differently.

Based on the results a study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers have identified a group of people to be “exceptional agers”, or people living into their 80’s and beyond without developing a disease.

How can we get to be exceptional agers? Here are some suggestions:

  1. Be an Optimist.  People who are resilient and think in a positive manner tend to have fewer health problems as they age.
  2. Healthy Diet and Weight. Know your body and how it is affected by different foods. Losing weight can allow you to discontinue medications, relieve pain
  3. Tease your brain. Challenge your brain 45 minutes each day! It will lower your risk of dementia and improve your memory. Reading music, a different language, math problems, reading, crossword puzzles, etc..
  4. Stay Active. Exercise decreases your risk of many disease, and improves your mood.
  5. Be Socially Active. Maintaining social connections with friends and family is one of the best ways for exceptional aging.
