Ways to Adapt Traditional 4th of July Activities for Seniors
The 4th of July can be overwhelming for seniors. The heat, fireworks, and outdoor activities can be exhausting and may not be well-suited for older adults. Fortunately, there are some better alternatives to help adapt your traditional 4th of July activities while staying comfortable and calm. 
  1. Limit direct sun exposure.  Prolonged time in the sun can be especially dangerous for seniors. Alternate time between outside in the shade in the air conditioning. Find a cool and shady spot, stay hydrated, and reapply sunscreen!
  2. For seniors with Alzheimer's or dementia, limit the time spent a large gatherings to reduce the chance of agitation, anxiety, or anger. 
  3. Have fun with food. Involve your loved one in cooking and food prep as much as they are able to. It may help them feel more involved and included when they can contribute to a meal. Prepare a simple patriotic dessert, like colorful fruit skewers or a red, white, and blue Jell-O mold. 
  4. Bring a wheelchair or portable chair. Make sure your loved ones always have a comfortable seat that supports their back. This helps prevent fatigue, especially if you go out to watch fireworks, so your loved one won't get tired from too much standing.
  5. Encourage hydration. Older adults are more prone to dehydration than their younger counterparts. Encourage your loved one to drink water, and bring some of their favorite drinks to prevent dehydration.
  6. Play games. Let your senior loved one pick out a board or card game that they remember from their childhood, or have them teach you a card game that you haven't learned yet.
